Natural Communities of Rhode Island
RINHS is pleased to announce the publication of the Natural Communities of Rhode Island by R. Enser and J. Lundgren.
This document replaces the first edition of the Natural Communities of RI published in 2000 by R. Enser, and provides a consistent basis for describing RI’s natural communities.

Invasive Plant Control Demonstration Project
| To gain understanding of the management and ecology of two invasive plant species, identified as potential threats by the RI Invasive Species Council, the Rhode Island Natural History Survey has established two management plots in forested habitats in southern Rhode Island. The Alton Jones Site supports a mixed hardwood forest dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum), | ![]() |
with a dense understory of Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). Japanese barberry is becoming a disruptive component of forest understories throughout Rhode Island. Control for this species and its control is a concern for many land managers in the state.
