Invasive Plant Control Demonstration Project

To gain understanding of the management and ecology of two invasive plant species, identified as potential threats by the RI Invasive Species Council, the Rhode Island Natural History Survey has established two management plots in forested habitats in southern Rhode Island. The Alton Jones Site supports a mixed hardwood forest dominated by sugar maple (Acer saccharum),

with a dense understory of Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii). Japanese barberry is becoming a disruptive component of forest understories throughout Rhode Island. Control for this species and its control is a concern for many land managers in the state.

The control demonstration and workshops is a project of the Rhode Island Natural History Survey, with funding from the U.S. Forest Service and additional support from Largess Forestry, URI College of the Environment and Life Sciences, and the Rhode Island Foundation.
