FHWP Priority Species
The FHWP has developed two lists of species for inventory and control: the “Early Eight” and the “Dirty Dozen”
The Early Eight
These eight species are Early Detection/ Rapid Response species that are either:
1) Not known to be in the state, but found in neighboring CT & MA, or
2) Thought to have limited distributions in Rhode Islands.
Please report these species immediately by using this FORM.

The Dirty Dozen
These 12 species are fairly ubiquitous in the state. FHWP will focus inventory and control efforts for these species in priority forest areas where forest health is threatened.
- Asiatic bittersweet (Celastrus orbiculatus)
- Autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata)
- Bush honeysuckles (Lonicera species)
- Glossy buckthorn (Frangula alnus)
- Japanese knotweed (Polygonum cuspidatum)
- Japanese barberry (Berberis thunbergii)
- Japanese honeysuckle (Lonicera japonica)
- Multiflora rose (Rosa multiflora)
- Norway maple (Acer platanoides)
- Porcelain berry (Ampelopsis brevipendunculata)
- Tree of heaven (Ailanthus altissima)
- Winged Euonymous/Burning Bush (Euonymous alatus)
